Internships

For undergraduate students on the M.Biomed.Sci course who wish to enhance their undergraduate experience and significantly improve their career options there are excellent research opportunities of Internships (with bursaries) at:The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Each student will be assigned a Mentor at the host University and the student conducts research as advised by their Mentor. Students who have successfully completed their internships are eligible to apply for an Internship award. The duration of the Internship is 48 weeks excluding holidays. Co-ordinators at the host Universities facilitate the preparation (visas, accomodation etc) of potential internees and induction seminars are provided by the Biomedical Science Internship Tutor.

The Internship Programme

The School of Biomedical Sciences at Ulster has an agreement with the University of Texas Health Science Centre at San Antonio Department of Physiology (UTHSCSA) and Indiana University School of Medicine (IUPUI) whereby either University will accept suitable bioscience students for a one-year research internship. The agreement is ’to promote goodwill and academic collaboration, to provide an enhanced academic experience for students and to engender cultural ties’, thereby improving the academic and cultural experience of students. The internships provide a bursary.

University of Texas Health Science Centre

UTHSCSA is regarded as one of the top centers for biomedical research in the United States. Primary research areas include: Ageing, Cancer Biology and Neurobiology. Further details can be found by clicking here. An online video presentation is also available by clicking here. Three students from the School of Biomedical Sciences are now (academic year 2008-2009) at UTHSCSA and details can be found by clicking here.

Indiana University School of Medicine

Indiana University School of Medicine (IUPUI) has recently established the Riley Heart Research Center as part of the Wells Center for Paediatric Research in the School of Medicine. This provides a unique, multi-disciplinary approach to cardiology in studying the aetiology of heart conditions, including cardiovascular development. In paediatrics, research focuses on how gene expression, cell survival and growth pathways are inter-related. Further details can be found by clicking here.
